Undressing of the Beautiful Windmill
We are so pleased to see physical evidence that the building restoration is moving into it's final stages. The brickwork can now been seen through the reduced scaffolding and there are beautiful views again from up here! Watch out for the return of the Cap scheduled towards the end of this month. (Weather dependant).

Photo 1 - Did you know that the brickwork at the base of the Windmill is about 1.2 meters thick! Over 5,000 bricks have been replaced in the restoration so far, with the expected total to be around 6/7,000. Don't forget, you can donate to the project with our Buy-a-Brick scheme - a thoughtful and charitable Christmas present idea!
Thank you to Ross, our Site Manager, for a fabulous Tour of the Windmill the other week.

Photo 2 - Black Box AV paid a visit to the Windmill to discuss the installation of the new museum. One of the most challenging parts is to ensure that the projection onto the walls works with the curvature of the building.

Under the wrapping surrounding the Windmill, initial brickwork repairs have been completed to the Curb to allow the track plate to be installed. (The Curb is the circular track on top of the tower wall that supports and guides the rotating cap). Brick windowsills have been repaired, and repointing of external brickwork including replacing bricks and repairing arches has taken place.
Don’t forget you can register or dedicate a brick under your name – please email buyabrickthaxted@gmail.com for more information.

This month a rummage through time. Many old clippings and photos are held within the Trust's archives, including:
Photo 1: Our oldest photo of the Windmill from 1895.
Photo 2: Extract from The Daily Mirror, 8th November, 1934, depicting the Windmill behind the Almshouses. First The Chantry, a low thatched building, was built in the 14th century originally as a Priest's House. The second, the Alms Houses, a tiled building, built in 1714 once occupied by sixteen people -"13 widows, a man, a wife and a maid".

New Window Frames. The Carpenters have displayed quality and craftsmanship in our new and repaired window frames. This included lintel repairs to the window openings ready for window installation.

Handmade Bricks on site. We have replaced a whopping 4,000 bricks at the Windmill so far. Each brick is hand made using wooden moulds, taking on characteristics of the individual maker, something that cannot be replicated by any machine.
